About Kampabits KampaBits is a youth based training institution that uses ICT multimedia creatively to improve the lives of less privileged youth from the non-formal settlements (slums). We offer ICT training with specialization in Multimedia design/development. We have been in existence for the last 1 year KampaBits is a Non-Profit organisation that seeks to empower disadvantaged youth from the informal settlements of Kampala through ICT multimedia. KampaBits programme aims at empowering disadvantaged youth while giving them skills that enable them to enter the labour market. History Start up: The initial steps of KampaBits start up included a visit to Kamapala by Ineke Aquarius of Butterfly works (www.butterflyworks.org) and Anne Ikiara of Mamabits (www.mamabits.com) to forge a partnership with a local web design company Mountbatten Ltd (www.mountbatten.net) . Local Terre Des Hommes partners that operate within the Kampala’s informal settlements were contacted during that time to form initial partners for Kampabits. Platform for Labour Action and St. Elizabeth girls home were part of the initial partnership. By 12th September 2010, Kampabits was operational. The center was equipped with 23 state of the art computers, a super fast internet connection and a dedicated trainer thanks to Terre des homes Netherlants. The center started with 20 students, drawn from the informal settlements of Kawempe, Banda and Rubaga. Kampabits provides youth from informal settlements with basic skills in computer applications and web design a training that seeks to as much as possible to reflect the need of the ICT sector in Kampala. KampaBits is a brainchild of MamaBits (www.mamabits.com ) an affiliate of NairoBits Trust (www.nairobits.com ) MamaBits is working in partnership with Terre des Hommes Netherlands (www.terredeshommes.org ) in setting up KampaBits, the next sibling of the growing Bits franchise that currently include Zanzibits in Zanzibar and AdisBits in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The overall goal of KampaBits is to contribute to an improved quality of life for vulnerable youth. The immediate goal of KampaBits is to enable target youth to lead productive lives and make meaningful contributions in society. KampaBits targets youth from Kampala’s slums, aged 17 to 25 who have managed to complete O’Level education. |
